System Prompt, explained
A system prompt is a behind-the-scenes instruction that sets an AI's role, rules, and tone for a whole conversation, shaping how it responds before you type anything.
Before you send your first message, many AI tools include a hidden instruction called a system prompt. It sets the ground rules: who the assistant is, how it should behave, what tone to use, and what to avoid. Your messages then play out within those rules.
You usually do not write the system prompt directly in a chat, but consumer tools give you a version of it through custom instructions or profile settings, a saved note about who you are and how you want answers. Setting that once is one of the highest-leverage things most people never do.
Understanding the system prompt explains why an assistant has a consistent personality and limits, and why configuring your custom instructions makes every answer more relevant without re-explaining yourself each time.
