Prompt Engineering, explained

Prompt engineering is the skill of writing instructions that get an AI to produce the output you actually want, by giving it context, a clear task, and constraints.

Prompt engineering sounds technical, but it is really just clear instruction. A prompt is what you type to an AI; engineering it means structuring that input so the output is useful instead of generic. The difference between a vague request and a well-built one is usually the difference between something you toss and something you ship.

The reliable structure is simple: give context (who you are and the situation), a clear task (exactly what you want), the format you want it in, and any constraints (length, tone, what to avoid). Most weak results come from skipping the context and the constraints.

It is a skill, not a trick. A few good habits, like showing examples and steering with follow-ups instead of starting over, carry across every tool and every task.
