AI Agent, explained
An AI agent is an AI system that can take actions toward a goal, not just answer, by planning steps and using tools like search, code, or other software.
A regular chatbot answers what you ask and stops. An AI agent goes further: given a goal, it can plan a sequence of steps, use tools (search the web, run code, call other software), check its own progress, and keep going until the task is done. The model is the brain; the tools are the hands.
That makes agents powerful for multi-step work, like researching a topic and writing a report, or carrying out a task across several apps. It also makes them less predictable, because more autonomy means more places to go wrong, so good agents are built with limits and checkpoints.
The technology is real but early. The practical move today is to understand what an agent is, where it genuinely helps, and where a simple, supervised prompt is still the better tool.
